FRESH ARTS, a Houston-based non-profit, is seeking submissions of original fine art, unique crafts, jewelry, clothing, and other handmade goods for its 13th Annual Winter Holiday Art Market (WHAM)November 16-18, 2018. The 2018 WHAM artist call opens June 21 and ends Monday, August 26, 2018, at 11:59 PM. Participation is limited to Houston-based artists and artisans.

In its mission to provide artists access to economic development and networking opportunities, and to celebrate Houston’s diverse arts scene, Fresh Arts hosts WHAM, an annual 3-day juried art market + festival each fall at Winter Street Studios in the Washington Avenue Arts District.

Since its launch in 2006, WHAM has generated over $1,000,000 for hundreds of local artists and continues to grow as an important venue for Houston artists.

Artists or other representatives are expected to be at their tables during all WHAM hours.

    WHAM Application Guidelines:

    • *    Each application is subject to a $5 fee. 
    •    Only one application is needed for art collectives or artists that wish to share a booth; however, please list all participating names in the application. 

    • *    WHAM is open to ALL artists, artisans, art collectives, and creative business owners living within 60 (ish) miles of Houston.
    • *    You do NOT need to have a Business ID or Tax Permit. 
    • *    WHAM is NOT limited to professional or full-time artists.


      • *   Any type of original and/or handcrafted artwork or crafts may be submitted for consideration by the juried panels.
      • *   Applicable art mediums include all forms of FINE ART and HANDCRAFTED-ORIGINAL GOODS, including, but not limited to: 
        • Paintings,
        • Photography, 
        • Sculpture, 
        • Ceramics, 
        • Jewelry, 
        • Stationery, 
        • Soaps, 
        • Handbags, 
        • Clothing, 
        • Furniture,
        • and other orginal artwork and crafts.


      •  All interested artists must submit their application online by the deadline, August 26 by midnight.  (NOW CLOSED)
      •  Only one application is needed for art collectives or artists that wish to share a booth; however, please list all participating names in the application. 
      • *  55 applications will be selected through a competitive juried process. 
      • *  All applications will be notified of their status on September 10, 2018
      • *  The independent jury panel will be composed of local curators, art experts, and creative-minded individuals. 

      • NOTE: Artists will be selected on the basis of quality, type, and range of price points of merchandise and take into consideration those that best serve the interests of the local community, the market, and our customers   (see APPLICATION DISCLAIMER).

        TO APPLY:

        • *  Submit up to 12 images or files (past exhibition or booth images are a plus!)
        • *  Submit images that are representative of the type of artworks/products you are proposing to sell at the market. 
        • *  Include a written description of the types of products and price points of artwork/products.
        • *  Include artist websites, social media links, and a short bio and/or describe why you are a good fit for WHAM.
        •  Only one application is needed for art collectives or artists that wish to share a booth; however, please list all participating names in the application. 

        • NOTE: Incomplete, emailed, or late applications will not be accepted. Please do not call for results.

        WHAM Participation Guidelines: 

        • *    The registration fee for WHAM is $95.  (Fresh Arts Artist Members receive 10% off their registration fee)!
        • *    All sales are split 75/25 between the artist (75%) and Fresh Arts (25%) to cover event costs. Remaining profits generated from WHAM allows Fresh Arts to continue our free online resources and professional development programs for artists.
        • *    The 3% fee on any credit card transaction is subject to the same 75/25% split between the selling artist and Fresh Arts.
        • *    Artists will receive a check for the 75% sale of their goods and a detailed sales report within 10 business days of WHAM

        • Registration fees include a FREE 1 year Fresh Arts' Artist Membership (value: $50).
        • *Do NOT send in your participation fee until you have received acceptance into WHAM.
          • *    WHAM event management, rental coordination, and extensive marketing and PR.
          • *    Event fliers mailed to 15,000+ residences.
          • *    Advertisements via online and print marketing.
          • *    Artist promotional assistance through email templates, logos, and graphics, etc.
          • *    Artist "spotlights" via Fresh Arts social media channels.
          • *    Sales tax exemptions through Fresh Arts' state sales permit (therefore, artists are NOT required to have a business permit or sales tax license).
          • *    Fresh Arts is responsible for collecting and paying state sales tax on all WHAM transactions; however, artists are responsible for claiming sales on their yearly income tax reports.

            Additionally, each artist booth receives:

            • o   booth space (min. dimensions approx. 10’w x6’d)
            • o   80 sq. feet (min.) of hang-able wall space
            • o   one 8 ft x30" table and padded chair
            • o   black table linens
            • o   (1) Square reader + (1) sales receipt book 
            • o   free Wi-Fi (upon request)
            • o   access to electrical outlets (upon request)
            • o   complimentary beverages and lite snacks
            • o  Two complimentary guest tickets to the Friday Night Preview Party (value: $30)

            All sales transactions will be processed and tracked via Square. Artists will be responsible for processing all sales via Fresh Arts' Square account (basic Square sales training will be provided). Dedicated volunteers will be on hand to assist Artists;  however, all Artists must provide their own sales staff. 


            *  Artists will be selected on the basis of quality, type, and range of price points of merchandise and take into consideration those that best serve the interests of the local community, the market, and our customers. Our aim with the market is to focus on a wide array of art -- including fine art, crafts, jewelry, etc. -- and in our attempt to balance the market, we try to favor variety of art types and price points. 

            *  Due to a large number of WHAM applicants and limited space at Winter Street Studios, our jury sometimes have to make very difficult decisions in the voting process. Therefore, please understand that a declined notice of participation is not necessarily a judgment on the quality of your work.

            There will be no discrimination against an artist vendor by Fresh Arts on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or disability.
