The West Houston Community Center (WHCC) hosts the self-help and outreach programs of Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Fellowship of Memorial, Family Point Resources, Mosaic Theatre Company, the Palmer Drug Abuse Program and Young Life. Our initiative to help others grew from a ministry established about 1968 to provide independent facilities for community service programs.

The WHCC Building opened in June of 2003, a 12,000 square foot facility, situated on a 1¼ acre site. It includes meeting rooms, offices, an auditorium, a recreation room and snack bar. WHCC's design is intended to reinforce its purpose by being a comfortable, welcoming structure that accommodates a variety of uses by many groups.

Jones Hall is more than a performance hall. The magnificent beauty and design of the building has provided style for everything including corporate meetings and galas. Event planners have found the stage an ideal setting for creative productions. On multiple occasions, the stage has been transformed into a backdrop for receptions and business meetings. As many as 500 have dined on the stage at once. The stage offers practically limitless flexibility for a variety of performances and activities. Soaring 81 feet to the grid, the stage area is 120 feet wide and 55 feet deep. Deeper stage effects can be obtained by raising the orchestra pit. The proscenium opening is nearly 32 feet tall and 60 feet wide and this may be brought down to smaller sizes. The 63-ton symphony shell easily stores flush against backstage walls. Additional requirements such as dressing rooms, loading dock, freight elevator and lighting equipment are nearby.

The Orange Show is a folk-art environment - a monumental work of handmade architecture - located in Houston's East End. It was built single handedly from 1956 until its completion in 1979, by the late Jefferson Davis McKissack, a Houston postal worker.

The outdoor 3,000 square foot environment is maze like in design and includes an oasis, a wishing well, a pond, a stage, a museum, a gift shop, and several upper decks. It is constructed of concrete, brick, steel and found objects including gears, tiles, wagon wheels, mannequins, tractor seats and statuettes.

Jeff McKissack's creation extols the virtues of his favorite fruit and encourages visitors of all ages to follow his theories relating health and longevity to good nutrition, hard work and eating oranges. The Orange Show is one of the most important folk art environments in the United States.

The Orange Show monument is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5pm. Admission is $1.00 per person.

The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art preserves, presents, and promotes the extraordinary artistic expressions of ordinary people. Visit www.orangeshow.org for more information.

Discovery Green, a 12-acre park located in downtown Houston, opened on April 13, 2008. With its proximity to the George R. Brown Convention Center, Minute Maid Park and Toyota Center, Discovery Green is an ideal location for the city's newest attraction.

Visitors to the park can enjoy many natural, recreational, art, dining and eco-friendly features including:

    * one-acre lake
    * children's playground
    * interactive water features
    * amphitheater stage and slope
    * dog runs for large and small breeds
    * public art works
    * HPL Express
    * spacious green lawns
    * great restaurants, The Grove and The Lake House

In addition to surface lot and park perimeter parking, the Convention District Garage, operated by the City of Houston, lies beneath the park.

Designed by Hargreaves Associates, PageSoutherlandPage and Lauren Griffith Associates, along with a team of engineers and specialists, these carefully planned features allow the park to accommodate those seeking peace at the same time as those seeking activity. Much of this was accomplished via thoughtful use of organic boundaries, such as trees and water features.

The WiFi-connected site has been designed as a green environment that can accommodate many people at one time and service multiple community needs.
