About The Project
“Everything we use comes in boxes, cartons, the packaging we love so much. The mountain of things we throw away are much greater than the things we use.”
John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley
TRASH MOUNTAIN is a film study of refuse, garbage, rubbish, trash, whatever the word conjured when thinking about what it is we throw away. Americans generate about 250 million tons of trash per year, 35 million of that in Texas, which averages around 20 tons per Texan. It sounds like a lot, indeed it is a lot, although there is nothing really to compare it to. Numerous archeological studies can attest to the fact that humans have always created a lot of trash, as everything we make has a byproduct, from a stone tool to an iPhone.
