The Bryan Museum opened in 2015 on Galveston Island in the historic Galveston Orphans home. We are a young, dynamic museum of Western History and Art with a focus on Texas and its essential role in the story of the West. The Museum’s outstanding collection of art, artifacts and manuscripts spans 12,000 years and is the result of over 40 years of collecting by founder J.P. Bryan and his family.
Director of Education and Outreach
The Museum seeks a creative, energetic Director of Education and Outreach to build and manage a department that encompasses education, programming and visitor services. The Director of Education and Outreach plays a leadership role in developing strategies that make history meaningful and exciting for audiences of all ages with a specific focus on K-12 students and teachers. He or she will actively represent the Museum among professional colleagues and the public and will assist in the training of volunteers and docents. The Director of Education and Outreach manages a staff of five, four full-time and one part-time, and reports to the Museum Director.
- Provide leadership for all Education Department programs, including but not limited to: school field trip programs, offsite K-12 programs, community events, teacher professional development programs, public programs, and on-line offerings.
- Project manage the maintenance and improvement of existing Education Department programs.
- Spearhead the development of new K-12, Youth, Community, and Public Programs.
- Implement strategies for programs and guest interactions that support and enhance the guest experience.
- Oversee the evaluation of Education Department programs and activities to assess their reach and effectiveness.
- Support the Museum Director in long-term and annual planning and budgeting.
- Support fundraising efforts related to Education Department programs and operations, working inter-departmentally to support grant writing, execution, and reporting.
- Represent Education Department programs at conferences, and with partner organizations.
- Build and support collaborative partnerships with other departments, other divisions, and other organizations.
- Support organization-wide initiatives.
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum five years’ experience in the formal and/or informal education field
- Experience in managing staff and/or volunteers
- Experience in curriculum and/or program development
- Experience in program coordination
- Excellent communication and customer service skills, especially speaking in front of groups
- Basic understanding of the history of Texas and the American west
- Knowledge and understanding of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for social studies, art, and English Language Arts.”

The Bryan Museum is seeking an enthusiastic individual to work in its Gift Shop for part-time 3-4 days a week, 15-25 hours.

The Retail Clerk is responsible for ensuring our customers have a positive shopping experience while promoting sales. The Retail Clerk welcomes customers with a friendly greeting and eye contact, ensures proper merchandise presentation, operates the cash register in accordance with policies and procedures, maintains a clean work area always and treats fellow employees with courtesy and respect. The Retail Clerk is expected to be engaged in these tasks as assigned during all working hours and will be expected to perform a range of functions in all areas of the store as business needs require, including working at the Ticket Sales desk. An ideal candidate is creative and willing to find ways to improve store operations. Additional duties may be added as needed.
- Must be available to work weekends and certain holidays
- Effectively communicate with customers, associates, and Supervisory Staff in a friendly, respectful, cooperative and pleasant manner, whether it be in person, by phone or in writing.
- Ability to learn all store equipment and software, including iPads, cash registers, and barcode printers
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations commonly used in retail environments.
- Previous experience in a retail, inventory or customer setting preferred
- Flexibility in schedule
- Ability to spend up to 100% of working time standing, walking, and moving around the store.
- Ability to regularly bend at the waist, squat, kneel, climb, carry, reach, and stoop.
- Ability to regularly reach above shoulders and overhead
- Ability to occasionally push, pull, lift and carry more than 20 pounds. For example, but not limited to, working with carts of stock, racks of clothing, hard-line products.
