Dr. Sheng Kuan Chung Apprenticeship Scholarship in Abstract Painting

Having painted for over 40 years, Sheng Kuan Chung holds a doctorate from the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois, Urbana – Champaign. He currently teaches Art Education at University of Houston. Sheng has published over 50 academic articles in art education and has recently won two national prestigious awards from the National Art Education Association and United States Society for Education through Art for his seminal work in art education.  

Eligibility Criteria and the Scholarship

This apprenticeship scholarship is available to school students in Grades 3-12 living in the greater Houston area, whose artwork shows an interest in abstract expressionism and a desire to pursue an art-related profession. Two awardees will be selected to study with Sheng at his painting studio in the Montrose area for one year starting in June 2020. Each awardee will receive up to a $1000 scholarship to cover art supplies and associated expenses with participating in local juried exhibitions during the award period.

The application must include a signed letter of permission from custodial parent or lawful caregiver, a one-page biography and art statement, and 5-7 images of art samples.
