Celebrate the ninth year of the Houston Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions to discover great young voices on December 14, 2019 at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. This prestigious vocal competition, is free and open to the public, beginning at 10 A.M., ending approximately at 4 P.M., followed by a reception and announcement of the winners. The audience is invited to come for an aria or stay for the day.
Approximately 30-35 talented young artists will compete for $7,500 in cash prizes and a chance to perform on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. Houston District winners will participate in the Regional Auditions in New Orleans Sunday, January 5, 2020, striving to reach the Grand Finals on Sunday, March 1, 2020 in New York.
Recent Houston Grand Opera Studio Artists who won in the past include Jamie Barton, Rachel Willis-Sørensen, Reginald Smith, Jr., Yelena Dyachek, Sol Jin, Thomas Glass and Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen and this season’s Studio artists Elena Villalón, Richard Trey Smagur and William Guanbo Su. Other Grand Finals Winners who have performed in Houston recently include Ryan Speedo Green, Anthony Roth Constanzo, Michael Fabiano, and Lawrence Brownlee.
The Houston District is one of 40 districts across 12 regional organizations. For Houston’s December 14 Met Competition, the three judges will be: Darren Keith Woods, tenor and Artistic Director of the Seagle Music Colony upstate New York; Gayletha Nichols, early HGO Studio Director, later Executive Director of the Metropolitan Opera National Council and currently Director, Apprentice Program for Singers, Santa Fe Opera; and Christopher Cano, Head of Music and Director, Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio. All give critical feedback to the singers.
