Join Fresh Arts’ Executive Director Jenni Rebecca Stephenson and professional composer and musician, Jerry Ochoa of Two Star Symphony, for an overview workshop on strategies and resources for individual artists seeking funds to support their professional art career.

 

This workshop will cover: identifying grant opportunities (including several key local opportunities), increasing accessibility to additional funding through fiscal sponsorship, and securing individual contributions and institutional support. The workshop will also provide tips for creating and managing successful crowd-funding campaigns and offer examples of how local artists have successfully raised money for their projects. (Specifics on grant-writing and crafting proposals will NOT be covered in this workshop, but will be covered later in Fresh Arts’ workshop series.)

 

This workshop will apply to all types of individual artists including those in the visual, performing, filmmaking, literary, and multi-disciplinary fields.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:

Jenni Rebecca Stephensonhas been a student of dance and theatre, as well as vocal and instrumental music.  A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Houston, Jenni Rebecca studied vocal performance with Katherine Ciesinski and received her bachelors of music from the Moores School of Music, where she was a frequent soloist with the Moores Concert Chorale and performed multiple musical theatre/opera roles with the Moores Opera Center. Jenni Rebecca later received her Masters of Fine Arts in Theatre Directing at UH, where she directed for the Stuart Ostrow Musical Theatre Collaboration and the Edward Albee New Playwrights Workshop, as well as three full-length operas at the Moores Opera Center. 

 

In 2006, Jenni Rebecca co-founded Nova Arts Project, a nonprofit theatre company dedicated to recreating classics and inspiring new works in a fearlessly theatrical way, with whom she directed, as well as performed in several productions. In January 2009, Nova's founders won one of the first annual Houston Press MasterMind Awards for the company's work. Jenni Rebecca became Spacetaker's Executive Director in 2010. In the fall of 2011, she initiated and navigated a successful merger between Spacetaker and Fresh Arts Coalition, ushering in a new era for the combined organization-- now known as Fresh Arts.

 

Jerry Ochoais a composer & violinist with Two Star Symphony, a Houston-based original music ensemble. With Two Star, he has toured the U.S. and Europe and performed with Daniel Johnston, DJ Spooky and Amanda Palmer, while composing under commission from American Ballet Theatre, Lionsgate Films and many others.

 

In 2008 and 2009, Two Star Symphony won the Houston Press Music Awards for "Best Instrumental Ensemble" and "Best Undefinable Band". In 2010, Jerry spoke and performed with Two Star at the first Houston TED conference, TEDxHouston. In 2011, Jerry ran a crowd-funded campaign, raising over $7000 to make Two Star's Titus Andronicus album, which the Houston Chronicle named their Album of the Year. In 2012, the Houston Press named Jerry a Top 100 Creatives In Houston. In 2013, He ran a second successful crowd-funding campaign, raising over $5000 to make Two Star's first music video. Jerry is also the recipient of a 2012 Houston Arts Alliance Established Artists Grant and a 2013 Filmmakers grant from Southwest Alternative Media Project (SWAMP).
