Live stories on living with and overcoming mental health challenges, curated and shared by Houston artists
In its fourth year since its inception, Vox Culture is expanding its storytelling event line-up with the addition and launch of Vox Storytellers: Artist Voices. This new addition to the advocacy group's public storytelling lineup will serve to gather prominent and rising Houston-based artists to share their stories, starting with a conversation about mental health challenges artists face and the role it plays in their artistic discipline.
Six thoughtfully curated speakers, all Houston-based artists representing diverse backgrounds and artistic disciplines, will share their individual tales in the debut of `. Artists presenting include: Betirri Bengtson, Vanessa Longoria, Robyn Blodgett, Johnathon M. Espinoza, Nguyen T. Nguyen, and Ruby Rivera (TX Salsa Congress).
Sharing stories goes back to the most fundamental ways of building human connections. Vox Culture feels that it pays to sometimes dig back through our layers of modernity and embrace the calm poise of storytelling; all in an attempt to know each other better. The goal of this event is to connect Houstonians together in a deeper, more thoughtful way to the city's artist community and through the lens of mental health, build a better understanding of what it means and takes to be an artist in Houston.
Vox Storytellers: Artist Voices seeks to lend human voices and faces to thread a narrative on Houston's mental health dilemma – opening a creative discussion of addressing the accompanying stigmas that exist in the artist community and the wider public. This event is designed as a precursor to the main Vox Storytellers event scheduled for June 2019, which will be hosted in partnership with Vox Culture's primary collaborators on its Rise Above mental health initiative, the Houston Grand Opera and Mental Health America of Greater Houston. The stories curated by the artists will help serve to provide creative context on the subject of mental health in Houston and give us a more holistic picture. Ultimately, Vox Storytellers: Artist Voices hopes to begin to probe the question – how do we change perceptions on mental health stigmas?
The storytelling session will be followed by a artist panel discussion on mental health in the arts community and an audience Q&A. Samples of art work created by the participating artists will also be exhibited.
This event is also made possible by the Vox Storytellers’ program in-kind and repeat hosts, Cafeza. Seats are free but limited, therefore RSVP is strongly suggested. Please reserve your spot by selecting a ticket(s) and and presenting it at the door.
