Tales of Hoffmann

Looking for Love and Finding Something Weird

Three stories with elements of the bizarre are played out, all with the theme of lost love. Meet Olympia, a real doll; Antonia, a singer jousting with death; and Giulietta, a Venetian courtesan. E.T.A. Hoffmann was the author of these stories; Jacques Offenbach turned them into an opera. Hoffmann appears in the opera as a character, spinning his tales in a Nuremberg ale house and enacting them with each unattainable woman.
