How do you bring together six talented artists working independently under a common theme for a group show? The answer: make it fun.   Fresh Arts presents “Secret Sandwich”, a multimedia exhibition of new work from artists Monica Foote, Jonathan Jardin, Paris Jomadiao, Geoff Smith, Alyssa Stephens, and Alonso Tapia. In 2013 the local collaborative combined forces to create and distribute the limited edition zine, Cat Juice. In this first full-scale exhibition, they will turn their attention to dissecting an All-American lunchtime favorite. Using video projection, large-scale soft sculpture, fabric art, cut paper collage, graphic design, painting, and done in the collective’s distinctive tongue-in-cheek style of art making, “Secret Sandwich” will cut, layer and serve the results of their unique collaborative process in the Fresh Arts gallery.  The public is invited to a free opening reception with the artists beginning at 6 p.m., on Friday, December 5 at Fresh Arts, 2101 Winter Street, Studio B11, Houston, TX, 77007.  Free parking is available.

“The element of play is a big part of our process. Once it stops being fun we don’t want to do it anymore,” the artists agreed. “We were all wanting to do something to make us create and socialize, and we wanted to pursue opportunities that might be overwhelming to a single person but are feasible for the group.”

At its simplest, the sandwich is casual nourishment; on a more abstract level, the sandwich-as-form is layers of complementary materials bound between two substrates. Similarly, “Secret Sandwich” can be read on the surface as a fun show of fun work by fun-loving people, or a thoughtful mix of complementary work bound together by a common desire to socialize, create, exhibit and engage with observers in an open space.
