About On The Ledge:
On the Ledge (working title) features work by Houston-based artists Hillaree Hamblin and Grace Zuniga, whose art resides at the intersection of craft and installation, highlighting innovative ways of making and displaying.
Hillaree Hamblin collects and crafts curious assemblages of found rocks and mineral masses fabricated from hot glue, spray foam and paint, and salt washes. Morphing into mutant crystal altars, each object has its own formation narrative. Grace Zuniga conjures fragile, yet tough microcosms made from charcoal, paper, resin, lead, and gold leaf. When combined, these elements transform into large-scale wall installations, engulfing the viewer in an ecosystem of fibrous, layered systems.
Inspired by traditional display methods such as altars or cabinets of curiosity, the artists engage in acts of constructivist storytelling, exploring within these narratives material lifespan, animating the inanimate, and establishing moods through color and form. The individual components in their installations are akin to a cast of characters, with each object representing a specific point of interest, memory, or moment in time. As they come together in the larger composition, individual meanings combine to form statements— disseminated in clusters throughout the space, influenced by the context created through their placement.
Both artists rework everyday objects by pounding, snapping, pressing, stitching, melting, spraying, and molding—carefully guiding materials into new states of being. Compositions constructed from plastics, styrofoam, salts, inks, paper, thread, lead, gold leaf, spray paint, glue, resin, charcoal, and wood come together in different alchemical stages, weaving new, rich environments. All elements are politically and poetically charged in some form—the toxicity and longevity of plastic materials, the value and histories found in gold and lead, the fabrication and manipulation of carbon—and the artists use this to push the objects beyond their everyday uses into something more.
This exhibition will take place at BOX 13 from Feb 3-March 24, 2018, co-curated by Kelly Johnson and Chris Beer.
