The Business of Film Series is dedicated to strengthening the business, administrative, legal and marketing skills of independent filmmakers and the production team. With the independent film world changing daily, it’s vital to be informed about current trends in the production and distribution of film.

Whether you are an emerging filmmaker or an experienced producer, the Business of Film Series is for you. Filmmaking is a business and film production, documentary or narrative, is a journey that you can’t make effectively or efficiently without dealing with the reality of the business. Learn about the back office aspects of production, such as copyright, contracts, budgeting, insurance, and other essentials. Award-winning experts in the field will talk about current trends as well as the future of independent filmmaking.

Trish Avery has been in the media business for more than 30 years and currently serves as the SAG-AFTRA Executive Director for the Dallas-Fort Worth Local, representing members in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Trish began her media career in live theater, while working in commercials, corporate film and radio.  Since joining the SAG-AFTRA staff in 2007, Trish has helped support the growth of independent productions and media work for professional performers across the southwest.

Instructor: Megan Gilbride
Emmy-winning and Independent Spirit Award nominated producer of narrative and documentary films, Gilbride produced LOVERS OF HATE, a Sundance US Dramatic Competition premiere, released by IFC and nominated for a FIND Spirit Award. She produced the PBS-broadcast documentary SUNSHINE, and co-produced WHERE SOLDIERS COME FROM, which won the Truer Than Fiction FIND Spirit Award, aired on POV, and won a 2012 News and Documentary Emmy. Megan produced TOWER which has won awards at multiple festivals nation-wide, including the Grand Jury and Audience Prizes at SXSW. She is a Film Independent Fast Track Fellow and teaches at The University of Texas.
