Spontaneous Combustion

Spontaneous Combustion at Rockstar Gallery: Bringing two art forms together, art and poetry!

An Ekphrastic Poetry Experience. Poets, join
us for this one of a kind contest, based on Allen Ginsberg’s famous
phrase “First thought best thought” which described the Beat poets’ love
for spontaneity and immediacy in the arts. You are invited to
contemplate artwork by the featured artists at Rockstar gallery and to
write a poem in response to one of the pieces. Yes, you will turn down
your inner editor and tune in to what the art says to you in the moment.
Poets will have one hour to pen an ekphrastic poem, which they will
read to an audience of listeners, posting their poem beside the piece
that inspired it. The audience will then vote on their favorite poem of
the evening. Editing is overrated! It is time to just combust!

When:
Apr 19, 2017
Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a night of art and poetry! Write a poem on your favorite piece of art, and read it at the end of the night, or just come and enjoy the night and see the art and hear the poetry.

What is a poetry slam?

A poetry slam is a competitive event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience. Typically, the host or another organizer selects the judges, who are instructed to give numerical scores (on a zero to 10 or one to 10 scale) based on the poets' content and performance. The high score and the low score are dropped and the rest are added to give the poet their score for that round. The scores are added across the rounds and a final score it tallied and the top 3 scores win cash prizes. 2 Rounds.

The Shout: Why Is Your Fist Raised?

Why is your fist raised? Do you raise it with another against injustice or do you raise it against another in injustice?

Each month The Shout gathers to create a spoken word poetry focused, love filled, space where voices crying out for justice can be heard. We are a community that seeks to put our words into action, and to live justice as much as we talk about it.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so as we ask if your fist is raised if it is against injustice, we also want to create space to address the misuse of the fist in abuse against others.

Do not miss this powerful night!

Nyne will be your emcee, leading a great line up including:
Lupe Mendez

Corinna Delgado
