Main Street Square is built between two light rail stations in the 900 and 1100 blocks of Main Street. Trains zip through the center of the fountain in a light rail configuration like none other in the United States.

The METRORail and fountain water jets are the focal points of the square with the trains running through a 250-foot-long, eight-inch-deep reflecting pool. Thirteen jump jets with streams of water arc 40 feet into the air above Main Street and 39 smaller jets animate the perimeter of the pool. Trains stop on either side of the water features to pick up passengers. Masterfully planned landscaping invokes the feel of a green garden, full of flowering plants, trees and plenty of shade. Walkways display bold pavement designs, canopies and public seating.

Smither Park is a creative urban space that has developed with the help of artists and friends. Visionary artist and builder Dan Phillips worked alongside Stephanie Smither to design the park in memory of her late husband, John H. Smither. John and Stephanie were long-time supporters and collectors of self-taught art, as well as board members of the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. Stephanie Smither passed away in June of 2016, but her passion and commitment for the preservation and promotion of folk art lives on through Smither Park. The park is inspired by the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art's philosophy of promoting and sustaining self-taught art.

Nearly 300 artists from across the country have contributed to the beautiful hand-placed mosaic designs that cover the entire grounds, sourcing their materials from community members, neighbors, friends and companies who have donated broken dishes, mugs, glass, trinkets, and an endless array of found and recycled items. Anchored by a 400' long memory wall that is separated into over 50 panels designed by different artists, Smither Park also holds an amphitheater in the shape of a fish emerging from the ground, a pavilion that appears to be held up by shimmering trees, a dragon-themed swingset, a serene meditation garden, a unique marble roll tower, and a maze of sidewalks - each completely adorned with intricate mosaic work.

Smither Park's whimsical artistic design and community-oriented programming is a much-needed addition to the underserved area around The Orange Show, at the edge of the East End and Third Ward. The park will hold regular events including musical concerts, performance art, movies, art meetups, workshops, and much more. It's also available for private event rental for weddings, reunions, birthdays, or any special occasion.
