Open since October of 2015, MATCH was born of a desire to serve the broad spectrum of Houston's cultural arts organizations by providing a place where small to mid-sized cultural groups and individual artists could work in state-of-the-art facilities just like their more prominent and well-funded colleagues. With annual support from Houston First, MATCH is able to provide performance space, rehearsal space, exhibition and office space at rates nearly any artist or group can afford.
And there are a variety of spaces to choose from. Matchbox 1 is a small black box with a seating capacity of 90 that can also serve as a small gallery. Temporary risers and chairs can be configured as endstage, thrust or in the round. Matchbox 2 is the dance space with a permanent dance floor and seating for 159. Matchbox 3 is a large black box with a seating capacity of 175 that can also be configured in a variety of ways. Matchbox 4 is a more conventional proscenium space with fixed seating for 323. All four Matchboxes are served by a central Breezeway that runs from the Box Office and Cafe on Main Street to the Bus drop-off on Travis Street and acts as the lobby for all 4.
Across the Breezeway from Matchbox 4 is a 3000 square foot gallery. Adjacent to the Gallery in the South Building is a 60 foot wide rehearsal hall that can be used as one room or divided into thirds. Above the Gallery and the Rehearsal Hall are offices and cubicles that are available for rent to artists and arts groups.
