A free spring event featuring local artist guilds and community groups. Visitors of all ages are invited to see a variety of craft demonstrations—previous years have included blacksmithing and metal arts, woodturning, weaving, knitting, ceramics, book arts, and more—and visit the resident artists’ studios, view current exhibitions, and find one-of-a-kind gifts in the Asher Gallery.

CAC 2018 Art Competition

All artists are welcome to enter works including painting, drawing, pastel, mixed media, textile, photography and sculpture.

All artists are welcome to enter the 2018 art competition at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple, TX, including Central Texas residents, CAC members, college and high school students 16+, military or VA Hospital residents and area arts organizations. There will be Awards of Excellence, $150 award for Best in Show, as well as cash awards up to $100 in each category. There must be at least four (4) entries in each category to be judged as a category. Deadline is Friday, February 9, 2018, by 4 pm, and all works must be delivered to the CAC by this date.

Entry fee is $30 for the first two entries and $10 for each additional entry. Student works for ages 16-25 is $15 for the first entry and $5 for each additional entry. The Vermont Studio Center is a vibrant, diverse community of artists situated in Vermont's northern Green Mountains. Each month we welcome more than 50 writers and visual artists from across the country and around the globe to our historic campus along the Gihon River in the town of Johnson, Vermont.

Residencies range from 2 to 12 weeks and offer residents unrestricted time for creative work, along with daily opportunities to engage with fellow artists. Exhibition Overview
Organized by Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC), CraftTexas 2018 is the tenth in a series of juried exhibitions showcasing the finest in Texas-made contemporary craft.  In the fall of 2018, this encompassing exhibition will feature artists from across the state who work in clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and found/recycled materials.

The exhibition provides an introduction for the general public to develop an appreciation for the depth and breadth of craft being made in their local communities and across the state. Additionally, this unique show provides Texas artists the opportunity to be considered for inclusion in major national museum and private collections.

CraftTexas 2018 will be juried by Jennifer Scanlan, Curatorial and Exhibitions Director at Oklahoma Contemporary in Oklahoma City. She has curated a number of exhibitions at that institution, including Melvin Edwards: In OklahomaJeffrey Gibson: Speak to Me, and ArtNow 2017. From 2013 through 2015, she was a New York-based independent curator focusing on contemporary art and design.  Her exhibitions included Pathmakers: Women in Art; Craft and Design, Midcentury and Today at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.; Made for You: New Directions in Contemporary Design at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz; and Back to Eden: Contemporary Artists Wander the Garden at the Museum of Biblical Art in New York.

Previously, Scanlan was the associate curator at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. She has lectured internationally and has taught at Courtauld Institute of Art Summer School in London, England, and at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. She has a BA in art history and Italian from Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York, and a MA in the history of decorative arts, design, and culture from the Bard Graduate Center, New York, New York.

Artist Eligibility

  • CraftTexas 2018 is open to craft artists currently residing in Texas.
  • The following craft media is accepted: clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and found/recycled materials.
  • Each artist may submit up to three (3) original works completed within the last two (2) years.
  • Work must be available for the duration of the show and may not be withdrawn from the exhibition at any time prior to the closing date of January 6, 2019.
  • Crated work must fit through a 4′ x 8′ door, and actual work may not exceed 200 pounds in weight.
  • Work cannot have been exhibited at HCCC in the past.


  • Three (3) Award of Merit prizes of $1000 each will be selected by the juror.

Online Application Process

  • All applications must be completed and submitted online via the Slideroom system.
  • Applications will be accepted December 1, 2017 through April 30, 2018 (Midnight, Central Standard Time).
  • Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

Submission Materials

  • Artist statement (maximum of 1000 characters).
  • Artists may enter up to three (3) pieces of work. Artists should submit only one (1) digital image per work, for a total of up to three (3) images. All images must be in high-resolution .jpeg format (minimum size of 300 dpi and 4 x 6 inches.) DO NOT submit detail images.
  • Non-refundable entry fee of $36 to be paid by credit card.

Jury Process
Work submitted to CraftTexas 2018 will be juried via the Slideroom system using high-resolution digital images. Images must be accurate representations of the work. Accepted work that differs significantly from the images may be rejected at the discretion of HCCC. No substitutions of accepted work will be allowed.

Accepted Work

  • Notification of acceptance will be on or before June 1, 2018.
  • Accepted work must arrive to HCCC between Monday, September 17, and Friday, September 24, 2018. Please make proper arrangements for delivery or with your shipper to ensure arrival dates.
  • All work will be installed by professional staff and may not be shown at the discretion of HCCC’s curatorial department. Packaging and artworks must be in good condition and able to withstand the strains of transportation. Work must be properly packaged for travel; wooden crates or double-boxed cardboard containers are highly recommended.
  • Artists are responsible for transit and insurance of accepted work to HCCC. COD shipments will not be accepted.
  • HCCC will provide insurance for all works while they are exhibited on site and upon their return to the artist.
  • HCCC reserves the right to photograph and distribute any images of work in the exhibition for educational or publicity purposes, via electronic or print media of any kind.
  • HCCC may use the images submitted for the jury process for publication and publicity. Please ensure submitted images are professionally photographed and are print quality (minimum size of 300 dpi and 4 x 6 inches).

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) is pleased to present Treachery of Material: The Surrealist Impulse in Craft, featuring Michael Crowder and Julia Maria Künnap, two artists who use surrealist strategies and references in their work. The exhibition offers a series of puzzling and beautiful objects made from cast glass, fine metals and gemstones, along with nontraditional materials like ash and soap, to highlight the unexpected relationship between Surrealism and craft.

Known for its outlandish and irrational imagery meant to express the power of imagination and the unconscious mind, Surrealism has maintained its strong cultural relevance since its introduction in the 1920s, becoming a mainstay not only in art museums but in ad campaigns, films, fashion, and household objects as well.  Both Surrealism and craft incorporate a range of materials and traditions that have proven difficult to categorize as a whole. Many of the Surrealist masters, notably Salvador Dalí, Méret Oppenheim, Max Ernst, and Pedro Friedeberg, made forays into craft media during their careers, producing work in jewelry and metals, fiber and furniture. Their influence on craft continues today, as seen in the works of Crowder and Künnap.

Though he creates much of his sculpture from kiln-fired glass, often employing a pâte de verre technique that fuses glass particles into an open crystalline structure, Michael Crowder incorporates a range of particulate mediums like soap, sugar, chocolate, marble dust, wax, and ashes in his cast objects. His body of work, L’heure bleue, was completed during a fellowship at the home of Dora Maar (which she shared with Pablo Picasso) in Ménerbes, France. In the series, which references the “blue hour” between daylight and dark, he portrays 20th-century art historical icons that are sculpted and cast from nontraditional materials, which would be self-obliterating if ever used for their intended purpose.  From a wax pipe referencing Magritte’s famous painting, The Treachery of Images (1929), to a cast-glass tire alluding to Robert Raushenberg’s Untitled (glass tires) (1997), each of Crowder’s sculptural objects is made from materials that defy its function.

Künnap, on the other hand, applies her mastery of lapidary stonecutting to form gemstones that visually defy and denature the material itself.  Through an incredibly precise and time-consuming process, she captures a sense of wonderment in her work, creating gemstones that appear to be in an eternal state of melting, dripping, and splashing.  By capturing impossibilities that seem conceived of in a dream state, her pieces hold a strong conceptual link to some of the most famous visual strategies of Surrealism, such as the “melting” clocks depicted in Salvador Dalí’s seminal painting, The Persistence of Memory (1931).

Treachery of Material was curated by HCCC Curatorial Fellow, Sarah Darro, who traces a lineage of Surrealism in craft media through the exhibition. “The show brings to the fore two contemporary artists whose works apply key strategies and tenets of Surrealism to demonstrate the contemporary and continual significance of Surrealism in visual culture.”

About the Artists 

Michael Crowder holds an MFA degree from Kent State University in Ohio and is currently based in Houston, Texas. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of American Glass; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Gandi Maidan Museum in Patna, India.  He was nominated for the prestigious Louis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Award and was the recipient of multiple Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, fellowships at the Dora Maar House in Ménerbes, France.

Julia Maria Künnap holds an MFA in jewelry art from the Estonian Academy of the Arts and a degree from Konstfack, University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, Sweden. She is currently based in Tallinn, Estonia. She was the recipient of the prestigious Ruth Reisert-Hafner Stipendium and residency at the Alchimia School of Contemporary Jewellery in Florence. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and her first solo exhibition took place at the Emerging Artist Platform at Sienna Patti Gallery in Lenox, Massachusetts.

Now Hiring Art Teachers for 2018 Spring Break Art Camps

Design your camp, your way.

Art Professors, please pass this along to any upper-level students or recent graduates who you think would be good candidates.

Camp Dates are Monday – Friday, March 12-16, 2018

9:00-12:00 and/or 1:00-4:00*

Camps are 3 hours a day for 5 days, and allow students to dive into a specific topic or medium and explore it in some depth over the course of the week.

One camp should be for ages 5-8 and one for ages 9-12
You can opt to teach both camps for a solid 7-hour day (you'll get paid for 7 hours) or you can just pick one or the other.

If you can't do all 5 days, you can split the days between yourself and another teacher, but you need to work together on your plan for the week so it's a cohesive experience for the kids.   
You can also team-teach together at the same time if you're willing to split the pay.  

I will also be there every day to welcome the kids, get them checked in, do introductions, etc. and assist throughout the day as needed. 


  • WE HAVE A PRINTING PRESS!!!!  This one, in fact.  It's a very nice piece of equipment, I'd ask that kids never use it unsupervised. You'll probably want to be the one setting it up and maybe just let them turn the wheel. 
  • We can have a screen printing frames March; we'll need them anyway for the adult course in screen printing we're starting in April.
  • 6 digital cameras with tripods.  These are simple point-and-shoot and suitable for kids to use.  We can get parents to sign waivers if you want to do a photography walk-about in
    the downtown/strand neighborhood. 
  • 10+ bags of raw wool and silk for felting projects (dyed various beautiful colors)
  • We have access to several kilns with nearby businesses/organizations that can do both bisque and glaze firings.  There is staff on-site to help with them, too.
  • Digital projector and projection screen
  • Drying racks, 8 easels, and 16 adjustable-angle drafting table tops
  • All the basic supplies for painting, drawing and sculpting

The Visual Arts AIR program at Byrdcliffe welcomes artists working in the areas of painting, sculpture, drawing/works on paper, ceramics, craft, design, weaving, installation, photography (please note: very minimal non-digital darkroom facility on site), and film/video. If you are interested in printmaking, please contact us to discuss access to equipment before you apply.

Artists participating in Byrdcliffe's Artist-in-Residence program are asked to pay a subsidized fee of $700/month to attend which covers studio access and accommodations within a 250-acre mountain campus. You may select your accommodation preferences on the application.

Byrdcliffe offers financial aid to participants based on a combination of need and merit. In 2016, this support was made possible through the generosity of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and Byrdcliffe restricted funds, including the Milton and Sally Avery Fund for Visual Art. To be considered for a fellowship, artists must submit the required financial information as listed in the application under question #8. You will also need to attach a PDF of your most recent tax return to the File Upload section.

Beyond the general need and merit based aid available through the fellowship application, Byrdcliffe is offering the following fellowships with the support of our granting partners for the 2018 AiR season:

  • The annual Mantooth/Morabito Fellowship for an artist of color.

  • The annual Monica Coleman/Kate Pierson Fellowship for a self-identified woman artist.

  • The Pollock Krasner fellowship for visual artists (painting, sculpture and photography only) living/working in North America who have been affected by a natural disaster including, but not limited to, the recent wildfires in California, earthquakes in Mexico and hurricanes in Florida, Puerto Rico, and Texas.
