ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
As CultureMap’s listings editor and arts/food writer, Joel Luks’ columns explore Houston’s creative community, with special emphasis on classical music, education and multidisciplinary arts. He pores over thousands of local offerings to curate an extensive lifestyle events guide, manages social media channels and contributes to social marketing strategies. He produces video content and hosts the “Art and About” digital series, in addition to serving as an on-camera anchor for KHOU/CultureMap television segments aired on the morning news.
Before joining CultureMap’s editorial team, Luks worked as a sales and marketing professional in the real estate industry and as the education director of Young Audiences of Houston, where he led more than 100 artists to design arts-in-education curriculum for underserved schools and implemented professional development workshops.
Luks has served on the boards of Fresh Arts, formerly Spacetaker, the Impulse Artist Series and on the advisory board of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra. He has been a featured speaker on social media strategy, public relations and trends in the arts.
Luks holds a bachelor of music degree and a Performer’s Certificate with a focus on arts leadership and entrepreneurship from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., graduating magna cum laude. He earned a master’s degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, where as part of his studies he expanded the institution’s outreach engagement component.
